Do holiday prices only go up? Why booking in a hurry can cost you
"Only 2 rooms left!" "Prices are rising, book today!" Holiday prices change all the time, and they go down more often than many booking sites would like you to think.
If you have ever searched for a holiday, you know the feeling. A red banner says "Only 2 rooms left at this price", a counter shows how many people are looking at the same hotel, and a friendly message tells you that prices will only go up. The message is always the same: book now, or pay more tomorrow.
Sometimes that is true. But often it isn't. Hotel and package prices move in both directions, and a holiday booked in a hurry can end up costing more than the same holiday booked a few weeks later.
How holiday prices really work
Hotels and airlines use dynamic pricing: prices are recalculated constantly based on demand, how full the hotel or plane is, the season and what competitors charge. A package holiday combines two of these moving prices, the hotel and the flight, and each can change independently, sometimes several times a day.
That means there is no single "price" of a holiday that can only rise. There is a price for your dates, your room and your flight today, and it can be different tomorrow: higher or lower.
Why prices drop
Prices fall more often than you might think. The most common reasons:
- The hotel is filling more slowly than planned. An empty room earns nothing, so hotels release discounts and special offers to fill quiet weeks.
- New promotions. Offers such as free stays for children, long-stay discounts or seasonal campaigns appear during the year, not only at the start of sales.
- Extra flights. When airlines add flights or bigger planes on a popular route, more seats become available and fares can fall.
- Cancellations. Rooms and seats released by other travellers go back on sale, sometimes at a lower price.
- Last-minute deals. Rooms and seats that are still unsold shortly before departure are often discounted to fill them.
When prices really do go up
To be fair, "book early" is sometimes good advice. Prices tend to rise, and choice gets smaller, when:
- you travel during school holidays or peak summer weeks, when demand is high everywhere;
- you need a specific room type: family rooms, suites and connecting rooms are limited and sell out first;
- you want a particular popular hotel on fixed dates;
- an early-booking discount ends on a published date: that is a real deadline, not a marketing trick.
How to read "only 2 rooms left" and other urgency messages
Urgency messages are designed to make you decide quickly. They are not always false, but they rarely tell the whole story:
- "Only 2 rooms left" often refers to one room type at one rate on that particular website, not to the whole hotel.
- "12 people are looking at this hotel" says nothing about how many will actually book.
- Countdown timers on "deals" often restart or are followed by a new offer.
Treat these messages as a reason to check, not a reason to panic. If the price is good and the conditions suit you, book. If not, take a breath and compare.
When to book now and when to wait
| Book now if… | Wait and watch if… |
|---|---|
| you travel in school holidays or peak weeks | your dates are flexible |
| you need a family room, suite or connecting rooms | you travel in May, June, September or October |
| an early-booking discount ends soon | the resort is large with many rooms of your type |
| the price is already one you are happy with | the price is higher than what you saw earlier |
How to avoid overpaying
1. Be flexible if you can
Moving your departure by a day or two, or choosing a slightly different trip length, can change the price noticeably. Flights on some days of the week are simply cheaper.
2. Track the price instead of guessing
Instead of checking every day, let the price come to you. On Wenfly you can set a price alert on any trip option: we check the price of your hotel, dates and room every day and notify you in your Wenfly account when it goes down or up. You just need a free account.
3. Check the booking conditions
Before you book, look at the cancellation and change conditions. With flexible conditions, a later price drop is an opportunity rather than a regret.
4. Book early when it really matters
For peak dates and scarce room types, securing the room early is often worth more than a possible small saving. You can still keep an eye on prices afterwards.
5. Let someone else watch after you book
With Wenfly Prime, you don't have to keep checking after booking: we monitor the price of your trip and, if it drops, rebook you at the lower price automatically. Prime is launching soon. Join the waitlist to get 30% off.
The bottom line
Holiday prices don't only go up. They move with demand, and they fall often, especially outside peak weeks. Book quickly when the dates, the room or the deal really are scarce; otherwise, compare calmly, set a price alert and let the price come to you.

Frequently asked questions
Do hotel prices go down closer to the travel date?
They often do, especially outside peak season, when hotels and airlines discount unsold rooms and seats. For school holidays, peak weeks and scarce room types, prices usually rise and choice gets smaller as the date approaches.
Is "only 2 rooms left" true?
It can be, but it often refers to one room type at one rate on that website, not to the whole hotel. Treat it as a reason to check the price and conditions, not as a reason to book in a hurry.
When is the best time to book an all-inclusive holiday?
Book early for school holidays, peak summer weeks and family rooms. If your dates are flexible or you travel in May, June, September or October, it usually pays to compare and track the price before booking.
What if the price drops after I book?
It depends on your booking conditions, so check the cancellation and change rules before you book. With Wenfly Prime, we monitor the price after booking and rebook you automatically if it drops.
How do Wenfly price alerts work?
Set a price alert on any trip option. We check the price for your hotel, dates and room every day and notify you in your Wenfly account when it goes down or up. You need a free Wenfly account.
